‘Lakhori’ reveals that the variety of chili was first grown in a village called Lakhora situated on the border of Garhwal and Kumaon in Uttarakhand thus giving its name. Bhikiyasain and Salt in Almora district of Uttrakhand are famous for growing Lakhori Mirch (chilli) inspite of futile attempts to grow it in other regions or states in India. Besides Yellow Color, what distinguishes Lakhori mirch from the other varieties is that it gets a specific type of wrinkle on drying. Lakhori mirch can be categorized into two types based on their size. The smallest one also known as Lakori Jamri, have most number of seeds and are alleged to be used to make Chilli Flakes and the big ones are used as whole spices or grinded into powder, .. Lakhori Mirch cultivation require lot of hard work compare to other crops. The sowing season varies but is generally around February to March; lakhori mirch is sown by scattering seeds around and harvesting starts in October. Once chillies are harvested and sun dried, can be used round the year. Women farmers generally grind it and use it in powdered form as chillies with more seeds are usually hotter than the rest. This way, heat gets balanced because chillies vary on pungency scale.
